A.V.C.
POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE
ORIGIN AND GROWTH
Our Institution owes its birth to the magnificent role played by the
ANBANATHAPURAM VAHAYARA CHARITIES (A.V.C.) Mayiladuthurai. It was at the end of
the last century that a great ancestor of the well known five families who now
constitute the A.V.C. trust. Thiru. S. RAMALINGAM Pillai, set apart a sixth
share of the property of his deceased son Thiru. R. VELAYUTHAM Pillai for
charitable purposes. His descendants settle down in Anbanathapuram,
Enathimangalam, Pallavarayapet, Kargudy and Kanganamputhur villages.
The property of the trust was managed by the eldest male member of the five
families. The charities include mass feeding at Chidambaram and Mayiladuthurai
during festivals, conducting and supporting regular poojas in various temples.
In 1948 to ensure better course of charities, some elders of these families took
initiative. With the result that a scheme was framed for the trust by the
sub-court of Mayiladuthurai and it appointed Messers. S. RETHINAM Pillai,
N.
SOMASUNDARAM Pillai, B. THIRUGNANAM Pillai, R.K. SUBRAMANIYA Pillai, N.
PANCHANATHAM Pillai and T. SADAYAPPA Pillai as the first trustees of the
charities. Right from its inception 192 years ago the A.V. Charities has been
serving humanity in the field of religion and charities activities by
contributing to the performance of daily pooja in almost all the temples in and
around Mayiladuthurai and Chidambaram.
In addition, it runs a free hostel for about thirty boys at Mayiladuthurai. A
building was constructed by the charities at manalmedu for housing the local
fund Hospital. A general ward was constructed at a cost of Rs.40,000/- in
Mahatma Gandhi T.B. Sanatorium in Sengipatti near Thanjavur. The palakari Bridge
on the river cauvery was also constructed by the charities. A marriage hall at
Mayiladuthurai and shopping arcade at Chidambaram are also provided by the
A.V.
Charities. Because of the efficient course of the trust, it was possible to
accumulate a surplus of Rs. 2.5 lakhs.
With this fund the long fled need to start an Institution of higher learning
could be given shape with the active support and guidance of Thiru. T.K.
PALANIAPPAN, I.A.S., the collector of Thanjavur District, who had chosen the
site. The A.V. Charities started A.V.C. College in 195 to serve in the field of
higher education, the reputed service of which is recognized throughout the
state of Tamil Nadu. It has grown in strength all these years and developed into
a post-Graduate Autonomous Institution. Above all this the course thought of
serving this part of Tamil Nadu in the field of Technical Education.
Encouraged by the policy of the Government to allow self-financing Institutions
in the field of Technical Education, the A.V. Charities at its meeting held on
28.06.83 resolved to start a polytechnic and the application for the same was
sent to the Government. The Government of Tamil Nadu was kind enough to permit
the trust to start a polytechnic from Academic year 1983-' 84 and permission was
accorded for the three year Diploma course in the three disciplines of civil,
Mechanical and Electrical & Electronics Engineering with a total intake of
180 students. The course is very much grateful to the Tamilnadu Government for
sanction given to start the Institution. The classes commenced on 24-11-' 83
ceremoniously after a religious function.
In the Academic year 1987-' 88 the polytechnic got permission to start a three
year Diploma course in computer Technology with an intake of 60 students. In the
academic year 2001-' 02 the polytechnic got permission to start three year
Diploma courses in Information technology and Electronics and communication
Engineering with an intake of 90 students. Now the total intake of the
polytechnic college is 330 students. With the undertaking and co-operation of
the enlightened parents, their wards, support, encouragement and guidance given
by the course committee, the institution serves the cause of Technical Education
and upholds the good tradition of A.V.C. Polytechnic College.
